In my Yoga Therapy sessions with students I am often asked about how yoga may aid in weight-loss or help to prevent weight-gain. It's a totally fair question as our weight is very intimately linked with our body image and self-worth for the majority of people. I personally have struggled with body image issues all of my life. I'll admit that I still go through periods where my body image is out of whack and it's often a signal that I need to go within to see what's really bothering me. My own yoga practice provides almost all the tools I need to get it back on track. Yoga teaches us to have a conscious spiritual relationship with our body and mind while illuminating how incredibly capable we are.
I don't advise students invest too much energy concerning themselves over how yoga may lead to weight-loss. It's better for it to come naturally as a benefit rather than be the sole focus of practice. Oftentimes our concerns over our weight are misguided habits of thinking. The root of those emotions have much more to do with not feeling desirable, worthy or accepted. When we come to a place of deep peace with ourselves and fully accept who we are as unique beings. Including our gifts, successes and bull shit that we need to work through those feelings of worthiness and acceptance come from within us. They aren't dependent on what size pants you are wearing or whether you fit into the insanely sized mainstream brands of yoga clothing (seriously WTF is going on there?!)
