At 39 weeks and one day pregnant I find myself filled with excitement and a feeling of readiness about giving birth to our first child any day now. The journey of pregnancy has been such an incredible one… I’ve learned things about myself, my belief systems and habits of being (samskaras) while growing mentally, physically and spiritually. It hasn’t always been easy - but it has always been worth it. :-)
Pregnancy has been filled with some of the sweetest experiences of my life. Feeling the baby move inside of me and sensing presence fills me with so much love it seems my heart will burst. I can only imagine how amplified that will be when I finally hold him against my chest!
Pregnancy has also been an earthshaking, ungrounding, raw and emotional experience. With so much unknown and so little “control” you have to learn to ride the waves. I think for me it is truly best described as a deeply spiritual experience. A woman’s womb is literally growing a child and then opening to bring that being into the world. In the study of yoga we view the lower pelvis as a seat of spiritual energy in the body which leads to awakening. Through pregnancy and birth a woman’s soul is awakened in new and powerful ways!
Many women, like myself, try to arm themselves with tools to make pregnancy and birthing more easy and enjoyable. Some of the tools I’ve chosen to pick up along the way are: Active Birthing and Hypnobabies. Both of these approaches have yogic elements to them and it has benefitted me greatly to learn about them. Through Active Birthing I discovered different postures and movement patterns that can help women birth more comfortably and at a healthy pace. In Hypnobabies I learned about affirmations, self-hypnosis and techniques for mentally interpreting child birth as a natural, comfortable and normal experience.
At the end of the day however my greatest tool continues to be my yoga practice. The experience of connecting deeply with oneself, mastering the body and mind, breathing and developing resources to promote balance is everything I need to give birth to my baby. This realization by itself has been so empowering!!!
Here are some of the Yogic tools I plan to incorporate during my natural childbirth:
